More tips from Sister Ricks...

What do you do when you are your child's primary teacher and the child expects you to give him/her all the attention or always call on him/her?

This problem must be addressed before you enter the classroom. Several ideas occur to me. First is a rotating answer chart where students are given the chance to answer in order. Your child could be the “first” answer monitor of the rotating chart and call on appropriate student, thus giving him a chance to participate fully without being in the spotlight. Then he could choose who would be the second monitor.

Second, you could ask your child beforehand to be your “assistant” with various assignments and titles such as help with setting up chairs (valet), making sure there is chalk and an eraser (librarian--his assignment when you pick up pictures at the library), holding the door open for the other students (door monitor), keeping track of who has had a chance to give opening and closing prayers (secretary—maybe on a written chart), and whose birthdays happen each month (birthday coordinator).

This can keep him happy and involved and will make your denial of him getting to answer each question and get all the attention with a simple, “Remember, Jon. You are not my answer man today, you are my ‘door monitor’ (or whatever assignment you need done right away).

Take care now, Sister M
